My Approach to Therapy

Therapy isn't one-size-fits-all, and I don't work that way. My approach is relational — meaning the relationship between us is central to the work. I bring curiosity, warmth, and honesty to our sessions, and I tailor how we work to what you need, not a fixed formula.

That said, my work is rooted in a clear theoretical foundation. I trained in Psychodynamic, Transactional Analysis (TA), and Humanistic approaches at the Northern Guild — and I draw on all three, depending on what's most useful for you.

The Approaches I Draw On

Psychodynamic
Therapy

A lot of what drives our behaviour, feelings, and patterns happens outside of our conscious awareness. Psychodynamic work helps us look beneath the surface — exploring where your current struggles might have their roots in earlier experiences, relationships, or the environment you grew up in.

This isn't about endlessly revisiting the past. It's about understanding it clearly enough that it stops running the show.

Transactional Analysis (TA)

TA gives us a practical, understandable language for what's happening in our inner world and in our relationships. It helps you recognise the patterns — the scripts, the self-talk, the ways of relating — that you've carried for years, often without realising it.

Clients often find TA frameworks genuinely illuminating. Once you can name something, you can start to change it.

Humanistic
Therapy

At the heart of humanistic therapy is a belief that you are the expert on your own experience. My role isn't to tell you what to do or hand you a diagnosis — it's to create a space where you feel safe enough to explore what's really going on, and to reconnect with your own sense of direction.

This means I meet you where you are, without judgement, and trust the process of working together.

What This Looks Like in Practice

In our sessions, you set the agenda. We follow what feels most alive or pressing for you. Over time, patterns tend to emerge — and that's where the deeper work happens.

Some of what we might explore together:

  • Where certain feelings, fears, or behaviours come from — and why they made sense at the time

  • How past relationships or experiences show up in your present life

  • Unhelpful patterns like people-pleasing, self-criticism, or emotional avoidance

  • How to regulate your nervous system when things feel overwhelming

  • Building a more compassionate, trusting relationship with yourself

Psychotherapeutic Counselling is not about quick fixes

I usually work with clients on a weekly basis over a period of months. Therapy works best when there’s continuity and space for things to develop gradually. As a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, I’m trained and experienced in working at depth — going beyond surface-level coping strategies to explore what’s really driving your experience. This kind of work takes time, and that’s by design. I also offer shorter-term work where that’s a better fit — something we can talk through in our introductory call.

Depth-oriented therapy is particularly well-suited if you’re dealing with long-standing patterns, persistent low mood or anxiety, relational difficulties, or a sense that you’ve tried other things and still feel stuck. If you’re unsure whether this approach is right for you, just ask — I’d rather have that conversation early than have you in the wrong kind of therapy.
